Two exhibitions will be opened at TENT tonight at 20 pm: in its solo exhibition Navigating the Imaginary Rotterdam artist Anouk Griffioen shows enormous charcoal drawings and a video work, and in the fourth and final edition of The Back Room shows work by the 'underexposed but iconic' Turkish artist Esma Yiğitoğlu. Navigating the Imaginary

Majestic charcoal drawings come to life in a total installation in which flora, fauna and human figures merge into a surreal world. The installation is central Navigating the Imaginary, a twenty-two meter long charcoal drawing on which Griffioen has worked intensively over the past two years. The exhibition has been compiled by Mariette Dölle, director Kranenburgh in Bergen.

L'Homme qui marche to Wuppertal

The well-known sculpture by Auguste Rodin on the Westersingel will be temporarily loaned to the exhibition between October 2016 and March 2017 Degas und Rodin - The Race of the Giants towards the Modern in the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, Germany. The statue will be lifted from its pedestal on October 12 and is expected to return to Rotterdam in March 2017.

The Back Room - Esma Yiğitoğlu

TENT and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen show in The Back Room underexposed but iconic Rotterdam artists. The latest edition features work by the Turkish-Dutch artist Esma Yiğitoğlu (1944 - 2009). Yiğitoğlu's oeuvre consists of sculptures, drawings and paintings. In her early work she was inspired by material painters such as Antoni Tàpies.

The Dutch Volunteers

R&D project

In 2013 Gil & Moti were awarded an R&D contribution for their project The Dutch Volunteers, in which they volunteered for an Israeli settlement and for Palestinians in the West Bank. To be allowed to work as a volunteer in both areas, they accepted Dutch nationality.

The Kralingen failure

The 7th edition of the Art Route Kralingen-Crooswijk starts on 10 October. On 15 October, Siebe Thissen (head of BKOR) will give a lecture about 'The fiasco of Kralingen' in an evening program about Rotterdam art in Deelen Art (Admiraliteitskade 90-B). With further: poetry by Hester Knibbe, Manuel Kneepkens and Rien Vroegindeweij and music by Arie van der Krogt. Start: 19:30 PM.

Eliminating risks is disastrous for discovery

R&D contribution

Rotterdam artist Melle Smets and sociologist Joost van Onna followed the trail of discarded Western car parts to Ghana. Smets and Onna reversed the route and went to work with the Ghanaian car mechanics to produce the first car ever exported from Ghana to the West. The project was made possible in part with an R&D contribution.

BKOR.nl contains a database with an overview of works of art in the public space of Rotterdam, and contains information about the various statues, sculptures, monuments and artists. Artworks can be sorted by title, year, area or type of image via a submenu. You can also search for themes such as literature, animals, color, water or light.

Rotterdam Cultural Histories #9 looks back at Manifesta 1, the first edition of the traveling European biennale that took place in Rotterdam in June-August 1996. The exhibition sheds light on the realization of the first Manifesta by means of never-before-seen archive material. Z-Files #17: Frans de Wit

SIR is organizing a new edition of the series Z-Files, Art and the City to celebrate the new acquisitions to the collection. The monumental artworks of Frans de Wit (1949 - 2004) in Rotterdam are on display in a combined lunch lecture and bus tour. Ad Koolen, landscape architect and expert in the work of Frans de Wit, tells about the artist and these two works along the way.
