Z-Files XL - Art! Why?

The second Z-Files XL will take place on Tuesday evening 17 December, this time in 't Klooster on Afrikaanderplein. The evening is mainly devoted to art on the south bank of Rotterdam.

This Z-Files looks at art in three neighborhoods in South: Afrikaanderwijk, Tarwewijk and Bloemhof. Especially in these years of rapid change and increasing interest from all sides for these three neighborhoods around the Maashaven, with all its consequences, we find it important to look at what role art plays, can play or should even play in this process and in preserving the character of the neighborhoods, now and in the near future.

Why does a work of art touch?
Ten people are speaking. The starting point for the storytellers is the question why and why an artwork affects you. We are curious about the process that takes place between artwork, viewer and place. Each speaker is asked to examine one artwork within 7 minutes. It can be a work of art that is on South, or should be on South, according to the speaker.

Rotterdam South, from farm side to melting pot
In addition to listening, viewing is also possible. We show parts from the series Rotterdam South, from farm side to melting pot, which highlights both the history and the public space of Rotterdam South. The series, compiled by Perry Boomsluiter and Eelco Romeijn, tells about how six neighborhoods in South Rotterdam developed and shows the special buildings, streets, squares, dikes and harbor basins with stories from residents.

Z-Files

With the Z-Files series, CBK Rotterdam wants to bring the special collection of artworks in the public space of Rotterdam to the fore and highlight current developments in the city.

This Z-Files is organized by CBK Rotterdam / Sculpture International Rotterdam in collaboration with 't Klooster.

Maashaven Palace

The title of these Z-Files refers to the Maashaven Palace project: in May 2020, Sculpture International Rotterdam is organizing the Maashaven Palace; a program about and with visual arts in the South, with an international exhibition at the House of Urban Arts and neighborhood programs in the three neighborhoods around metro station Maashaven.
