Woody van Amen at IFFR

With two hundred dollars in his pocket, Woody van Amen left in 1961 by cargo ship from Rotterdam to New York. He met artists such as Andy Warhol and jazz poet Ted Joans. Woody's personal 8mm films from New York are the starting point of the short documentary Pop-Secret by Pascale Korteweg and shows the culture shock that turned Van Amens life upside down. Back in Rotterdam, he produced an endless stream of pop art-based works in his Kralingian studio. Resilience and constant inspiration give Van Amen the energy to keep creating, even at the age of 82.

After the short documentary, journalist Frank van Dijl (NRC) at the table with Van Amen to talk about his work and life. To stay in the mood, a playful visual poem by Korteweg follows with Van Amens 8mm films from New York and Rotterdam, accompanied live by Lukas Simonis (guitar) and Nina Hitz (cello). In collaboration with OPEN Rotterdam and City Archives Rotterdam.
