What is 'real' and are you sure about it? Can you rely on your own perception when so many experiences are digital or influenced by processes in our brain? Biomedical research shows how our thoughts and senses create 'gaps' between reality and what we perceive. How do we find our way through such 'blind spots', which make us susceptible to fake news, but which we also sometimes need to escape from harsh reality? Science answers these questions and also asks new questions. Researchers are learning more about our brain and mental disorders such as dementia, and about phenomena such as the placebo effect. At the same time, research in fields such as genetics and reproductive and regenerative medicine makes it possible to intervene dramatically in the reality of nature as we know it.
