The Flexible Artwork

Works of art are flexible, they can function in different contexts and recharge with new meanings. They are not bound by institutional frameworks such as museums with their emphasis on canon formation or platforms for contemporary art where a focus on experiment and current relevance predominates. What are the alternatives within exhibition practice that promote a more flexible approach to the presentation of the artwork?

On Saturday afternoon 3 December at 13.30 hour, artists and curators will discuss the way in which art can stretch the framework of the art institute and offer alternatives to exhibition practice. The discussion forms the final piece of The Back Room, a collaboration between TENT and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in which curator Noor Mertens presents work by an older generation of artists in the context of TENT's current programming.
