Studio Art Office | On that bike #8: Rib, Niffo and Corpo
The last edition of the event will take place on Wednesday 9 October Op die fiets in 2024, a bike tour for Rotterdam artists along artist initiatives in the city. We take a “look behind the scenes” of various initiatives to learn more about how they work and discuss (possible) interfaces with their own art practice. Interaction is central: visitors and the initiatives can ask each other questions.
The bike tour passes three initiatives, takes about three hours and ends with a drink at one of the locations. The route is not only informative, but also a nice opportunity to network with each other.
During the eighth edition on Wednesday 9 October 2024 we will visit various initiatives in Rotterdam-Zuid: Rib, Niffo and Corpo, an initiative in De Hillevliet. What are the motivations, challenges and starting points for artists in these initiatives? Discover it this afternoon
Rib
We start in Charlois next to a playground that is sometimes part of the Rib program, sometimes there is a lecture or music can be heard. Rib was founded in 2015 by Maziar Afrassiabi in a former butcher's shop and has undergone several metamorphoses. After series of 'regular' exhibitions, the exhibition program started in 2022 The Last Terminal which now has several episodes, in principle on an annual basis. The focus is on contemporary art that art is a process of making and rejecting, of change and reflecting on it. In the summer months, artists are invited to a so-called Summer Lab where they work on their own work in the space with a closing presentation in the last weekend. From a great interest in music and sound as a medium for art, a sound studio was added last year, a few houses further in the basement of the bookshop-cum-studio.
Maziar will explain the different guises of Rib and tell us something about the current exhibition.
niffo
Our second stop is at Niffo, near the Afrikaanderplein. Niffo is more than an art space, it is also a recycling studio and a meeting point for (mainly young) people from the neighborhood. Zoë Cochia is the founder of Niffo; with a small team she organizes exhibitions, workshops and concerts while the initiative is also open to hosting team building outings for companies. Communication and connection across age limits and social backgrounds are at the forefront at Niffo. In that sense, collaboration with the diverse groups at Niffo is central.
Body
We conclude this round at Corpo, one of the approximately 30 initiatives in De Hillevliet. Specifically, we visit Stichting Corpo, founded by Clara Brito, Ani Kehayova and Noemi Bardas – all active in the fields of dance, performance, movement theory in the broadest and social sense. As such, Corpo offers a program around movement, such as yoga, meditation and movement lab. In addition, the studio is made available to an artist (group) for research one week a month, on the condition of a public moment or the involvement of the neighborhood. The direct connection with the environment is in the foreground, in addition to the development of our own programs or pieces. It is possible that we will get moving there. Here we conclude the afternoon program with a drink in the entrance hall, which also functions as a place for lectures or presentations and as an exhibition space.
Bonus! At 18.30:20.00-XNUMX:XNUMX PM Corpo is organizing the Movement Lab where we welcome free of charge, whoever wants. Wear comfortable clothing or bring them, no specific experience required.

* 'On that bike' is a translation of the Rotterdam Expression 'Op die Fiets', which means as much as a way of doing things. Literally, “on that bicycle”, modeled after in that manner (“in that manner, that way”), where manner (“manner, way”) is replaced with bicycle (“bicycle”). The phrase originates from Rotterdam but has since spread. Source: Wikipedia
