Studio Art Office | On that bike #7: The Neighborhood Palace, The Archives and Graphic Atelier Minnigh
On Thursday, September 12, Ewald x Ros is organizing the seventh edition of Art Office On that bike, a bicycle tour for Rotterdam artists along three artist initiatives in the city. During this bike tour we get a look behind the scenes of three different initiatives, we hear how they work and we investigate the interfaces with our own art practice. Interaction is central: artists and initiatives can ask each other questions. In addition, it offers a great networking opportunity and we conclude the program with a drink at one of the initiatives.
The District Palace
We start at Het Wijkpaleis, a healthy neighborhood business in Rotterdam-West, where everything revolves around making – in the sense of 'manufacturing, creating, manufacturing' and about 'making in life'. It is a place to learn from each other by creating and doing business together. The 'village hall' offers space for meeting, and in the four public production places - from community kitchen to making room, from textile workshop to wood workshop - people can make things together. The 18 workshops provide accommodation for professional makers and the branch of the RK Maria Primary School is a real neighborhood school. In short, a dynamic place that offers space for special encounters and cross-pollination.
The archive
Our second stop is a visit to The Archives. This modernist design by municipal architect André van Stekelenburg from 1967, at Robert Fruinstraat 52, was at the time a third extension of the municipal archives. Now it is a creative breeding ground, with H(a)L on the ground floor and outside, a real artists' place. H(a)L is driven by Herman Lamers, who shares with us his approach to the changing exhibitions with side programming in Het Archief, good for surprising art encounters and confrontations on Saturdays and Sundays from 13:00 PM - 17:00 PM.
Graphic studio Minnigh
We conclude the program with a visit to the Graphic Studio Minnigh in De Kroon at Schiemond 22. The Graphic Studio Minnigh is the local workshop in Rotterdam for graphics and printing techniques in the visual arts, design and poetry. It is a community for and by artists, offering a fun and productive workplace, organizing and supporting graphics-related projects, open studios, graphics swaps, graphic jams and entry-level courses. As a member you get 24/7 access to the workshop. Non-members with printing experience are welcome at the Open Walk-in on Tuesday evening or Thursday morning to make an etching, lino, litho or riso print.
Not only will we receive a verbal introduction, but we will also 'get our hands dirty' during a short workshop by one of the members. The end time of the program may be extended during the closing drink to celebrate the 'dry needle' results.

* 'On that bike' is a translation of the Rotterdam Expression 'Op die Fiets', which means as much as a way of doing things. Literally, “on that bicycle”, modeled after in that manner (“in that manner, that way”), where manner (“manner, way”) is replaced with bicycle (“bicycle”). The phrase originates from Rotterdam but has since spread. Source: Wikipedia
