New artwork Rotterdamse Munt

The city gardens of Rotterdamse Munt open on Friday 24 April at 12 noon via a live stream five new entrance gates, designed by visual artist Michiel Jansen. Alderman Kasmi will perform the opening.

CBK Rotterdam commissioned Jansen in 2019 to design the entrances. Arcades & Portals, the title of the work, can be seen this week at the new location on Zuid on the Rosestraat.

Due to the restrictions surrounding the corona crisis, this moment does not lend itself to a grand revelation of Arcades & Portals. Therefore live streaming we do this as originally intended on Friday, April 24 at noon.

Opening by the councilor

Councilor Saïd Kasmi (Education, Culture and Tourism) opens the art gates and Spoken Word artist Carina Fernandes performs her rhyme, which she wrote especially for the city park.

Rotterdam art in public space

For this project, Rotterdamse Munt works together with BKOR / CBK Rotterdam. An important pillar of CBK Rotterdam is to bring out art in the public space in Rotterdam where residents of the city come into contact with it. This collaboration lends itself perfectly to this. A place like the city gardens of Rotterdamse Munt, an oasis on South is a relief in the concrete jungle that you encounter in some places on South.
Jansen makes with Arcades & Portals an architectural work that comes into its own thanks to the organic shapes. It offers both symbolic and literal access to the lush city gardens and contrasts with the diligent construction of the Paperclip, the building opposite these city gardens of Rotterdam Mint.

Performance by Carina Fernandes

Rotterdamse Munt and CBK Rotterdam see the gardens as a specific place in the city where you can give both philosophical and poetic words. Whirlwind, centipede and spoken word artist Caroline Fernandes is known as the Rotterdam CEO for Diffusion of Positive Energy and we can all use that under the current circumstances. After Alderman Kasmi has opened the gates, Fernandes also wears live her rhyme in front of.

Michael Jansen

Michiel Jansen (1973) graduated from the Academy of Art & Design in 's-Hertogenbosch at the department of sculpture and other media in 2000. He exhibits mainly within Europe in galleries and independent art spaces. His work can be found in a number of private collections and cultural organizations in the Netherlands. He is mainly concerned with installations, sculptures and collages, based on the space in which they (or he) are located or the materials with which he works. The choice of materials, method and use of form have a strong link with architecture, which may be a result of his unfinished study of Architecture in the years 92 - 94 in Eindhoven. In addition to his artistry, he has always been involved in organizing and producing and has been an active part of TAC in Eindhoven and the Nederlandsche Cacaofabriek in Helmond. After moving to Rotterdam, he founded the SingerSweatShop, an artist's building in the middle of the center, with living, working and exhibition opportunities. In 2013 he moved temporarily to Berlin and on his return to Rotterdam in 2014 he focused full time on his own work again. Since 2016 he is a member of the artist group If Paradise Is Half As Nice.

This applied artwork by Michiel Jansen was made possible by the Municipality of Rotterdam.
