Lions on the Coolsingel

Incredible stories from the war is an exhibition in Museum Rotterdam about Rotterdam in the Second World War. A perspective was chosen in which fact and fiction have merged. Strong stories, colored memories and myths determine our image of the war as much as objects, archives and photos. Were lions really walking over the Coolsingel after the bombing?

The space of the museum is arranged in five rooms, in which objects are displayed against the background of an enormous mural. CBK Rotterdam selected and supervised the five Rotterdam artists, each of whom mural on their behalf. In the selection process, the makers' ability to work strongly narratively played a role, as well as the desire of CBK Rotterdam to show the audience five characteristic, but also very different drawing styles. CBK Rotterdam also contributed to the fees for the artists.

Each artist was not only linked to a thematic subject (bombardment, war, daily life, trauma, reconstruction), but also to a historian with whom to spar. Inge Aanstoot, Isra Paez, Bier & Brood, Sandim Mendes and Luuk Bode made the five enormous paintings. The works excel in their combination of historical events and artistic freedom. In addition, a film is shown with each mural in which the artist and the historian talk about their work and subject.
