Coolstof x TENT: Maurice Meewisse - BLOK CONCRETE
TENT presents Blok Beton, a street performance by Maurice Meewisse. This will take place on Friday evening (Kunstavond) 9 February at Schiedamsesingel 80. Blok Beton is COOLSTOF's fourth project: a series of performances realized by five Kunstblock institutions in the Cool district, around Witte de Withstraat.
Physical labor is the source of inspiration for Mewisses projects. With performances and actions such as the felling of a tree or melting of metal, he brings an ode to physical work, the value of which in our increasingly automated and digitized society sometimes seems to disappear from view. More than the result, it is about the action of working itself, which becomes a social and symbolic event.
Blok Beton responds to people's need to invest their work in something that has utility or meaning. Physical labor is the source of inspiration for Meewisse's projects. In the performance, Meewisse mixes and pours concrete in a mold. The sounds that are produced here are sampled on the spot by sound artist Jordy Walker. The hard work will be celebrated at the same time as a winter party with cake-and-zopie. Performance and installation artist Maurice Meewisse lives in Rotterdam. He usually works outside, and has previously worked at, among others, the Oerolfestival, Terschelling (2013); Fest i Nova festival, Georgia (2015); Lucy / Galerie Sanaa, Utrecht (2015); Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus (2015); Sand Motor, The Hague (2017) and Arte Concordia, Rotterdam (2017).
The Kunstblock institutions MAMA, WORM, V2_, TENT Rotterdam and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art have invited various artists and collectives to realize special projects. Every month from September 2017 to May 2018 there is a surprising performance, performance, intervention or installation in the Cool neighborhood. The projects (also) take place on Friday evening, during De Kunstavond. The first COOLSTOF edition was a performance by Geo Wyeth for Showroom MAMA in September 2017. COOLSTOF is made possible in part by the Municipality of Rotterdam.
