about A Woman

Organizes around International Women's Day 2020 about A woman an exhibition at Art Space Rotterdam with the work of eight female artists. about A woman offers in this exhibition a reflection on the girl from different perspectives and in different disciplines. Within the context of the exhibition, the artists talk to guests, guest speakers and the public about the position of the female artist in the current art field.

Under the title about A woman was the first exhibition organized in 2013 at art stage De Witte Slagerij in Rotterdam. What is the situation now - seven years later - with emancipation in the arts? A year ago Mama Cash published a research report on the position of female artists in the Netherlands, with the conclusion that the visual presence of women in art is far from average.

The initiative for about A woman was taken by visual artist Maritsa van Luttikhuizen, who has now sought collaboration with Astrid Moors, Debbie Voerman and Rolina Nell. With about A woman the artists bring their own work and that of their female colleagues to the attention and engage in a discussion about their position in the current art field. about A woman intends to put this theme on the agenda elsewhere in the country through this concept.

about A woman - girlhood

artists:

Astrid Moors

In her paintings, Astrid Moors often depicts people in situations, in groups or alone, passively immersed in their activities. The individuals convey a contemporary form of loneliness. They are painted in an abstract, recognizable environment. An in-between moment, as if time has stood still.

Debbie Carter

Debbie Voerman paints portraits. Her work is rough, raw, unadorned, fanatic, passionate, spontaneous, powerful, splashing, dripping, unpolished, large (even in small) magnified, posed, large surfaces, hard colors, rich in contrast, not polished, you look at and keep chasing you. Debbie has created new work especially for this exhibition.

Guda Koster

The sculptures of Guda Koster are characterized by the use of the human body, clothing, fabrics and patterns. The work looks sleek and serious, but it also has something humorous.

Guda's work moves between fashion, sculpture, photography and performance.

Hinke Schreuders

Hinke Schreuders has been making small paintings or drawings on canvas with needle and thread since 2002. For these embroidery works, she uses both borrowed images and personal photo material. In doing so, she explores the tension between female role models, sexuality and pornography.

Ingrid van der Hoeven

Ingrid van der Hoeven makes sculptures: busts, torsos and standing female figures. In their attitude, the images of women are both defiant and alert, but also thoughtful. Ingrid finds visual material for her sculptures in Asian fashion magazines and calendars and in the streets of Rotterdam.

Maritsa van Luttikhuizen

Maritsa van Luttikhuizen has been working primarily on drawings for the past year. With pencil and paper she examines body, emotion, mental condition. Vulnerability versus potential. The sometimes alienating images seem to show an inner statement that invites the viewer to their own reflection.

Netty van Osch

The sculptures of Netty van Osch are part of a "Universal Autobiography". They are built around their own chosen PO and Kuna style figures. PO (pawn) stands for the common, it is a being who wants to work together. Kuna (king) stands for the individual, it is a monarch.

Rolina Nell

Rolina Nell's paintings and drawings arise from perception and interaction with the environment and daily life. She is fascinated by the universal attitudes and poses of women and girls, who subtly and culturally reveal a personality. In her work the identity remains mysterious and the past is tangible.
