Public Works: Imagination instead of Advertising
Now that so many performances, concerts and festivals are canceled, the billboards are lost. Public Works is an outdoor exhibition throughout the city with work by more than 400 visual artists, designers, photographers, image makers and illustrators. Simply to fill the void that had arisen and to show that imagination is better than advertising.
Event organizer Joost Maaskant (Stichting de Loodsen), graphic design Sibe Kokke (NOTDEF) and program maker Rineke Kraaij (Great Dutch Art Calendar) found each other in the annoyance cycling around the city full of signs announcing what was never going to happen. Art had to be there. An open call was made to artists to submit a work. More than 500 artists responded to this. In the end, more than 400 works were selected. The result is a totally colorful collection of images from established and upcoming makers. Young and old. Amateur and professional. This collection forms the public works public exhibition throughout the city.
On 9 July, the festive opening will be at 20.00 p.m. and all artists will be invited to stand with their friends at an appropriate distance from their work. This creates a Corona proof opening in which a food truck will drive around to provide the makers with drinks. All makers receive 9 posters of their work that they can sell themselves at 35 euros each.
Public Works is partly thanks to a contribution from the Activities City scheme. With this contribution, CBK Rotterdam wants to make the city more attractive with visual art and give Rotterdam visual artists a role in this, thereby increasing their visibility.
