Open Call: city designers 2020

Rotterdam city artists wanted

After a pilot project in 2018, in which ten Rotterdam artists captured ten different buildings by Rotterdam architect Hugh Maaskant, and the edition in 2019 in which three artists based the themes on the city street culture, urban agriculture en sport , this year CBK Rotterdam and the Rotterdam City Archives are also looking for the Rotterdam city designers of 2020. We call on Rotterdam artists to submit documentation on the basis of which a jury makes a choice for a maximum of three artists.

The theme for this year is: People make the city. Whether we like it or not, Rotterdam is pounding and bustling like never before, and sometimes things go a little sore. Those who only know Rotterdam by heart twenty years ago will become breathless when they see all the people who are now Rotterdam together. The columnist and editor of NRC Lofti described El Hamidi in an article Rotterdam like the new Netherlands, that's what he saw, sitting in the metro during the evening rush hour. What we are looking for are three city artistss those armed with a sketchbook that capture the new Rotterdam. Not only through buildings, but especially the people who make our city - on the street, at work, young people, the elderly, in the tram, on the furniture boulevard, the Chinese supermarket, the barber, in the Zuiderpark, on the Charloisse Hoofd , eating fries on the Afrikaandermarkt or Binnenrotte, strolling on the Hoogstraat between Bogatir and Woei - in short, the entire city where people are with each other and live together, encounters on the square meter.

The selected artists will each receive a sketchbook with which they will set off. The sketchbooks, filled with people and encounters that fascinated them, are the result of those journeys through the city.

Documentation can be sent until 1 March at the latest
stadstekenaars2020@cbkrotterdam.nl.

The documentation consists of a motivation (maximum 1 A4), a CV (maximum 1 A4) and visual material in the form of a digital portfolio of maximum 20 MB. The jury will make a choice from the entries at the end of March 2020. This year it consists of: Hugo Borst (Rotterdammer, art lover and collector), Hedy Tjin (artist), Shehera Grot (Kunsthal), Jantje Steenhuis and Wanda Waanders (City Archives), Ove Lucas (CBK Rotterdam).

The fee for the city draftsman 2020 is € 5.000 per artist.

At the end of 2020 the sketchbooks (possibly supplemented with framed drawings) will be presented in the Kunsthal. After the exhibition, the sketchbooks will be included in the City Archives collection.
